In aumento il tumore al rene e un articolo dell’American Journal of Clinical Nutrition punta il dito contro un consumo eccessivo di carne cotta alla piastra. Aumentano infatti i casi in adulti forti consumatori, meglio dunque non superare i 500 grammi alla settimana. A questa conclusione è giunto uno studio dell’Health Science Center dell’università del North Texas e pubblicato sull’American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Circa 500mila adulti ultracinquantenni sono stati intervistati sulle loro abitudini alimentari e seguiti per una media di nove anni. Durante il periodo d’indagine il 19% del campione ha sviluppato il tumore del rene e tutti hanno ammesso un alto consumo di carne rossa cotta su piastre arroventate. La causa sarebbe nel maggiore apporto di ammine eterocicliche, HCA, sostanze chimiche sviluppate nella carne cotta ad alte temperature. Questo studio è anche una conferma di un’altra ricerca dell’University of California che aveva già evidenziato come la carne grigliata poteva accrescere il rischio di cancro alla prostata e all´intestino, a causa della produzione di due agenti cancerogeni (MelQx e DiMelQx).

L’urologo Aldo Franco De Rose del San Martino di Genova consiglia: «Il World Cancer Research Fund suggerisce di non mangiare più di 70 grammi al giorno di carne rossa molto cotta e non superare i 500 grammi ogni settimana, evitando cotture prolungate. Protettiva è una dieta ricca di vegetali e verdure. Attenzione poi al fumo: la sua abolizione potrebbe ridurre di circa un 25% il rischio di sviluppare il tumore al rene. Sorveglianza più attenta per chi ha parenti di primo grado con carcinoma renale, il rischio di sviluppare lo stesso tumore è quattro volte maggiore rispetto alla popolazione generale».

Lodi, 5 febbraio 2012 – E’ stato aggredito e malmenato nel bel mezzo dei giardini del Passeggio, a Lodi, per aver detto a un uomo «che non poteva lasciar scorazzare il suo cane luposenza museruola». Brutta avventura venerdì mattina per Claudio Trezzani, 48 anni, che se l’è cavata con la perdita della macchina fotografica e sette giorni di prognosi.

«Stavo andando in posta, erano circa le 10 di mattina – racconta Trezzani – quando passando per i giardini ho visto quell’uomo, alto circa 1,90 metri e robusto, che aveva lasciato liberi i suoi due cani nel parco. Tra questi un cane lupo, senza museruola.

Una donna di 76 anni è stata aggredita da tre boxer questa mattina alle 9.30 al quartiere Monterosso. Stava tornando a casa, in via Galileo Galilei, dopo aver acquistato il giornale quando – secondo due testimoni e la polizia locale di Bergamo che sta ricostruendo la vicenda – è stata assalita da tre boxer. Uno l’ha azzannata e trascinata a terra, gli altri due si sono accaniti sul suo corpo, in particolare su un braccio, il volto e un orecchio.

StoneMor Partners L.P. (STON), together with its subsidiaries, engages in the ownership and operation of cemeteries in the United States. As an MLP, it has units and not shares, and it declares distributions and not dividends.

StoneMor is the second largest owner and operator of cemeteries in the US. The Company currently operates 273 cemeteries and 70 funeral homes, diversely located across 28 states and Puerto Rico.
StoneMor has demonstrated a consistent track record of growth and financial performance. Revenue has increased from $145 million in 2007 to $197 million in 2010. For the period, Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) is 12%. Also, adjusted operating profits have increased from $26 million in 2007 to $38 million in 2010. For the period, CAGR is 15%. How does StoneMor do that? Basically, STON buys cemeteries and funeral homes and then – thanks to scale, experience, management, standard processes – it increases their efficiencies. It squeezes more earnings out of existing business and improves business turnover as well.

It weathered well the 2008 crisis (chart courtesy Yahoo Finance):

Stonemor kept increasing the reward to its unitholders. On May 2, 2007, for example, it declared a quarterly cash distribution of $0.50. Almost five years later, latest distribution (Nov 2, 2011) was $0,585.

StoneMor needs money to finance its growth, since it makes more sense to borrow money at a lower rate than it is able to make out of acquisitions.

It recently announced that it has received from its senior bank syndicate a revised and increased credit facility which will facilitate the growth of its business, including future cemetery and funeral home acquisitions. The credit facility was increased by $10 million to $130 million, requires no amortization of principal, the loan term was extended until 2017, and the interest rate was reduced by eliminating the LIBOR floor. The fixed charge coverage ratio was eliminated and replaced by a debt service coverage ratio which provides the company with enhanced flexibility.

A revised and increased credit facility means STON will be able to fund more acquisitions, improve those businesses and grow again. It is good news.

StoneMor currently (it closed @ $26.07 on 01/20/2012) yields 9.30%.

Aggressione nell’”Area sgambatura cani” dei Giardini Margherita

Aggressione ieri all’interno del principale parco cittadino. La segnalazione di una lettrice:
Chi frequenta i giardini Margherita avrà avuto modo di verificare con i propri occhi che in una zona degli stessi è nata un area cani impropriamente considerata tale da proprietari incoscenti di cani che, non essendo recintata, non la si potrebbe considerare tale.

Ogni giorno (maggiore concentramento nel week end) si radunano gruppi di decine di persone e altrettanti cani che corrono liberamente per il perimetro di parco conquistato illecitamente, spesso si verificano litigi e aggressioni tra cani che si risolvono nel nulla, ieri a me personalmente è capitato di essere aggredita fisicamente da 2 cani di taglia medio grande.
